Ultimate abilities
Powerful, high-impact abilities gated behind a charge meter, cooldown, or resource, saved for decisive moments rather than used freely. Overwatch's ultimates and League of Legends' champion ults are match-defining tools whose timing and coordination often decide fights. Designers use ultimates to create dramatic momentum swings and highlight moments, to reward good timing and team coordination (comboing ults), to give players an aspirational payoff for sustained play (charging the meter), and to add a strategic layer of when-to-commit decisions. Key decisions: how ultimates charge (over time, through actions, or per-kill), their power level (game-changing but not game-ending), telegraphing and counterplay (can enemies react to or interrupt an ult?), and the cadence of availability (frequent smaller ults versus rare huge ones). Pitfall: ultimates that are too frequent lose their special weight and become just another ability, while ones that are too powerful and un-counterable feel unfair to be on the receiving end of — the design must make ultimates feel momentous yet answerable, so both using and playing against them involve skill and timing.
