Card synergies
Cards that amplify each other when combined — one generates a resource another consumes, or several share a keyword that a payoff card rewards — so the deck's value comes from interactions, not individual cards. Synergies are what make deckbuilding deep: a card that's mediocre alone becomes build-defining in the right shell, and finding those combinations is the core intellectual pleasure of the genre. Designers use synergy webs to reward system mastery and to make a modest card pool yield many distinct archetypes. Key decisions: synergy density (how many cards support each theme), whether archetypes are signposted or discovered, enabler-to-payoff ratios (too few enablers and the payoff never fires), and guarding against a single dominant combo. Pitfall: 'solitaire' combos that win without meaningful interaction, or synergies so obscure players never assemble them — the sweet spot is combos that are discoverable, satisfying, and answerable.
