Affixes/modifiers

Items roll randomized property lines — +15% fire damage, +80 life, faster attack speed — drawn from pools, so two items of the same base type play completely differently. Affixes are the combinatorial engine of ARPG loot: a modest set of bases times a large affix pool yields effectively infinite gear, which is what sustains hundreds of hours of farming. Designers use them to make every drop a small evaluation puzzle and to enable build-defining chase items. Key decisions: prefix/suffix structure and affix count per rarity tier, tiered affix rolls (Path of Exile's numeric ranges create a 'perfect roll' aspiration), craftable versus purely random affixes, and weighting so power affixes stay rare. The chronic pitfall is affix bloat — pools padded with junk mods that dilute good rolls until identifying an upgrade requires a spreadsheet, killing the at-a-glance appraisal that makes loot fun.
